Brake Pad Replacements

As with any type of braking system, the brake pads in a drum brake assembly wear down over time. You won’t necessarily notice this wear as your slack adjusters take up the excess slack to ensure your brakes are always fully operational. However, once they wear down to a certain point, they must be replaced. This is a fairly complex process only in comparison to that of disc brakes, for drum brakes are enclosed assemblies. Slack Adjuster Calibration

Your slack adjusters are just as they sound, they take up slack! As your brake pads wear down, your brake assemblies pushrod will have to move farther and farther to bring your pads in contact with each drum. To ensure this isn’t the case, your slack adjusters will actually take up the slack and ensure your push rod doesn’t have to travel any farther than it normally would. This makes the braking process just as effective as when your pads were new!
